Crystal Lake Hike | Mammoth Lakes Basin | California

Crystal Lake lies just beneath the Mammoth Crest and Crystal Crag in the Mammoth Lakes Basin at 9600 feet. This awesome high mountain lake trail is a great place for a 3-4 hour session of Hiking & Exploring, add in Lunch and Fishing and you can make this a day trip. The best part about Crystal Lake is it’s well away from the main Mammoth Lakes Basin Traffic and Summer crowds. This hike takes about 30 – 60 minuets to reach Crystal Lake. You should consider this trail to be moderate in difficulty. You will be gaining about 900 vertical in rise over a 1.75 mile hike in. This hike feels longer and steeper because of the very high elevation peaking just before you reach the lake at 9,607 feet. There are lot’s of vista point’s to stop at and rest while on your way up. The view from some of those vista points stunning to say the least. The photo below is looking down on Lake George, Lake Mary and the Sherwin range.

Hike to Lake Barret & Lake TJ | Mammoth Lakes Basin, California

The Hike to Tj and Barret Lakes lies just beneath the Mammoth Crest and Crystal Crag in the Mammoth Lakes Basin at 9,293 feet. This high mountain hiking trail is a great place for a 3-4 hour session of hiking & exploring, add in lunch on the shore line and some fishing and you can make this a day trip. This hike takes about 30 – 60 minuets to reach Barret Lake depending on what type of shape you are in. Then it is a easy 10 minutes on to TJ Lake. You should consider this trail to be moderate in difficulty. You will be gaining about 290 vertical in rise over the first .75 mile’s of the hike in or should we say up to Lake Barret. I have read many online reviews and post’s about this section. For many people this is a challenge, our take is you need to be in basic shape and take it easy.

At this time I have a 47 out on my deck here at the 8175 foot level with no wind at this time. We picked up some rain showers once again late in the day on Saturday. The result of these light showers was more rainbows as you can see in the image just down the page. Besides the rainbows, the Eastern Sierra is looking nice and green not drought stricken and brown. Rain Today and then a Drying Trend for Mammoth Lakes

7-10-2015 – 7AM – Hello from Mammoth Lakes, California. Rain, rain and more rain below 10,000 feet the last 36 hours. Above that level many spots have picked up snow during that time frame. Looking at the rain gauge we picked up . 39 inches of rain on Thursday here at the 8175 foot level. As far as the snow goes, I saw a dusting re up several times on Thursday over Mammoth Mountain. Saddle Bag lake posted an image with 2-3 inches on the ground. Crazy stuff for July, after today things should clam down and return to more normal weather. However later this summer I would expect at least a couple more rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms. Late in the summer we will be watching for a possible tropical event to slide on up the coast. Not in the forecast but it’s in the cards possibly. The forecast for today is once again calling for a 50% chance of picking up some heavy rain showers mixed in with hail and snow above 10,500 feet. Looking at the radar this am you can see

First Dusting, is it snow or hail? Looks Like Snow!

7-9-2015 – 11:15 AM Good Day from the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area. Things are looking very green on Mammoth Mountain at this time. They are also looking a bit white over the top of the ski area. As of 11 am we just broke out of hour long down pour that brought snow levels down to around MC Coy Station with snow sticking about half way down the face of chair 3. Hard to believe it s July 9th and we are getting pouring rain in down off and on and snow above 10,500 feet. I saw on Facebook that Saddlebag lake had like 2-3 inches of snow snow on the ground along with Tioga Pass being closed for some time while they plowed the road. Been a very long time since we have since crazy summer like this With the rain we have been getting the mountain bike park is prime shape with the dust having been cut way back to almost nothing. Highs today will be in the 50s at the Mammoth Mountain Main Lodge, lows are expected to be in the 40s. As we move thru the next couple days temps come back up into the 6

7-8-2015 9:31 AM Hello from Mammoth Lakes, California. Flash Flood Watch Today On Tuesday the lower parts of town picked up very heavy rain mixed with lot s of hail. Up here on the Slopes at the 8175 foot level all I got was a few rain drops and lot s of rumbling thunder over head.  I did drive up the street to the top of Timber Ridge.  You could see the rain and hail falling down in town perfectly.  Below is a picture I got of the local down pour. Heavy Rain and Hail Falling in Mammoth Lakes on Tuesday The forecast for Today and Thursday is once again calling for a 80% chance of picking up some heavy rain showers mixed in with hail.  The NWS has posted a Flash Flood Watch from 10AM to 4PM for Mammoth Lakes and the local Back Country areas.
