Packed Powder Days at Mammoth Mountain

Mammoth Mountain was skiing and riding great this weekend. It’s a packed powder dream out there at this time and all the crowds have left the area. All those skiers and riders helped to pack out a lot of the hill off piste so when the winds picks up Wednesday we could be riding some fine wind blown sugar on packed out snow. Grooming wise Greg and his crew have been to a excellent job with all the natural snow. It’s amazing that we have over 40+ runs getting groomed out every night. If you like the corduroy get out at 8:30 daily this week for a soft blast of the groomed stuff. So much fun! Mammoth now has a base of 2 – 4 feet Chair 4 up to the top of Mammoth Mountain. There are 72 runs open with chairs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 21, 23 and G1 & G2 open from 8:30 am to 4 pm. Canyon Lodge and Eagle Lodge are now set to open on December 16th.

September 9th, 2015 – Mammoth Mountain Weather Outlook

Cal Trans Mammoth Mountain Cam Cal Trans 395 South Cam ____________________________________________ 9-9-2015 – 7:31 AM – Good morning from the Mammoth Mountain area. We have hazy skies this morning as they continue to work on the Rough Fire to our south.   The Fire has grown to 97,884 acres and is currently the largest active fire in California. There are 1,960 personnel currently assigned to the Rough Fire. Containment increased to 31%. To get this fire dead out we will need rain and then a nice snow pack. Until then we will see periods of smoke light to heavy in the Mammoth Lakes area.  If you’re sensitive to smoke I would not recommend being in the local area at this time.    Current Conditions:  Here at the 8175 foot level I have a 46, at Main Lodge its 48 and at the top of Mammoth Mountain it’s 52.  Winds are W at Main to 5-15 MPH and up top SW to 10-20 MPH.  The humidity level is at 57% with a de2 point at 32. Mammoth Lakes Forecast:  Highs will be 75-80 in town

Record-strength El NiƱo likely to bring wet winter to California in midst of worst drought on record

From the Weather West California Blog The big picture: trends in the tropical Pacific Ocean The tropical Pacific has taken a decidedly circuitous path over the past several years toward its present extraordinary warmth. Until 2014, persistent and increasingly anomalous warmth in the tropical West Pacific Ocean (near Indonesia) had been in place for the better part of two decades—not coincidentally since the last big El NiƱo event in 1997-1998. A little about Skiing, Mammoth Mountain, and Dave McCoy

In 1946 experts from the ski industry surveyed California’s Mammoth Mountain and officially declared it a terrible place for skiing. The slopes were too isolated, too windy, too high; they weren’t shaped right, and they had way too much snow. But nowadays, the Mammoth Mountain Ski area is one of the best and most successful ski resorts in the world. Dave McCoy is the man that made that happen. Without Dave, Mammoth Mountain would be nothing at all. For fifty years he worked tirelessly to turn Mammoth into what is today, and along the way he revolutionized the entire ski industry. ______________________________________ Watch this video on You Tube A little about Skiing, Mammoth Mountain, and Dave McCoy The post A little about Skiing, Mammoth Mountain, and Dave McCoy appeared first on MammothSnowman.com.

September 7th, 2015 – Mammoth Mountain Weather Outlook

9-7-2015 – 8AM – Good morning from Mammoth Lakes, we have very smoky skies this am.  PM 10 count went very high last night but the good news is they are dropping off fast this morning. Expect areas of smoke from the Rough Fire to continue off and on for at least the next 5-7 days.  I just talked to our contact that is on the fire lines and he said the fire is out for the most part and what we have left is a big smoldering mess.  He said to expect less and less smoke as we move through the week.   What we really need now is some rain to help with the almost 100,000 acres of smoldering terrain.  Looks like we have a slight chance for that to happen about 5-7 days out from hurricane Linda who could possibly send some moisture our way.   Below you can see one of the models has it going more north then west. Current Conditions:  Here at the 8175 foot level I have a 42, at main lodge its 50 and at the top of Mammoth Mountain it s 54.    Winds are WSW at Main to 5-15 MPH and u

Current Conditions: Here at the 8175 foot level I have a 47, at main lodge its 43 and at the top of Mammoth Mountain it’s 54. Winds are SSW at Main to 15-30 MPH and up top SW to 25-35 MPH. 8-22-2015 – Hazy Smoky Skies… Cancel that taste of Fall!

8-21-2015 – 1 PM – Hello from Mammoth Lakes, unfortunately we have lost our clear blue skies. At this time we have very hazy skies from dissipating smoke from the Rough fire.  The smoke now stretches from south of Ridgecrest all the way up to Reno and beyond. After days of mostly clear skies in Mammoth Lakes the Rough fire exploded on Thursday and is causing so much smoke out put that there is no way to escape it s grip until the fire backs down.   We expect to see periods of off and on smoke until we get some rain and or snow into the Sierra.   No sign of that happening in the next week to 10 days. We where expecting a big cool down this week, but you can cancel that as well.  It s going to be September until we get the real cool down we are waiting for. Current weather conditions: As of this post I have a temperature here at 8175 of 72, we have a 81 at the Mammoth Airport and a 77 at Footloose Sports.  Up at the Main Lodge it’s 68 and at the top of Mammoth Mountain it is

Below is a list of the open and closing dates we have at this time. At some point we will try to go forward and back in time to complete this entire list. I will put a call into Dave MC Coy, maybe he has it written down for the real early days of the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area. As a added bonus we have a desktop screen shot of the old snowfall history for Mammoth Mountain that included the dates we have listed below for you. Enjoy the information and I look forward to meeting you out on the slopes of Mammoth Mountain.
